Philadelphia Events

Yesterday, September 11, the $10 Million a Minute Bus Tour stopped in Philadelphia for events at Temple University and University of Pennsylvania. AC 360 was filming at both events for a segment that is airing Thursday, September 14 at 8:00 PM. Former Governor Ed Rendell was also in attendance at both events and spoke briefly to encourage citizens to take action and push elected leaders to fix our problems.

Temple University’s Fox School of Business hosted the tour yesterday morning to a standing-room-only crowd. The event was cosponsored by the Temple College Democrats and the Temple College Republicans, which indicates that the public is willing to put aside party lines and work together to solve our nation’s fiscal challenge.

The tour then made its way over to the University of Pennsylvania and the Fels Institute of Government. Dave and Rendell spoke with a smaller crowd of just over 50 people in a more formal setting. There was time for a longer presentation at Penn so Dave was able to poll the crowd by asking audience members to raise their hands if they thought the reforms presented should be on the table. There was almost unanimous support for most reforms, which shows that the public is willing to sacrifice in the short-term to ensure a better future for the long-term.

Later today we have an event at Carnegie Mellon University from 5-7 PM.

Penn State is a “state-related” university, part of Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth System of Higher Education . As such, although it receives funding from the Commonwealth and is connected to the state through its board of trustees, it is otherwise independent and not subject to the state’s direct control. For the 2006–2007 fiscal year, the university received 9.7 percent of its budget from state appropriations, the lowest of the four state-related institutions in Pennsylvania.
